HOLES- The environment
There once was a very large lake at Camp Green Lake, but there isn’t anymore. It was the largest lake in Texas. Nowday’s it’s nothing more than a dry flat waistland. Stanley and the boy’s all live in grey tents namend A, B, C etc. There are seven or eight boy’s in each tent and they all have a cot each to sleep on. The tents are dirty, the cots are rickety and the bed linnen doesn’t exactley smell like roses. There is one room for them to enjoy themselves in. But all the things in there were either torn, smashed or broken in one way or another.
There are some little animals who live in the red-brown dirt. The boy’s have been told to watch out for these animals. There are some extremely dangerous lizards and snakes out there in the waistland. Some of them will kill you in a minute.
It never rains at Camp Green Lake and the temperature is exorbitantly hot. The boy’s live under bad conditions out there. They don’t get much water or food. The camp is located so far away from civilization that no fences are needed incase they were to run away. 'Nobody runs away from here. We don't need a fence. Know why? Because we've got the only water for a hundred miles. You want to run away? You'll be buzzard food in three days.( Holes page 15)

The book is about three stories. One story is about Stanleys great great grandfather. Another is about Stanley and the third is about Camp Green Lake years and years ago, when it looked alot different than it does now. There used to be a town of Camp Green Lake, but the town died out along with the lake. It was once a beautiful and quite busy little town. But now it’s a hole.
